What is an Energy Star rating and why is it important?

As much as half of the energy a home uses results from heating and cooling systems. So it makes good sense to really understand what you’re investing in when you purchase a new or replacement HVAC system – including anything to do with heating, air conditioning, ventilation, or air quality. Not only important to the comfort of your home, they also impact your spending in the form of utility bills and maintenance costs.

What does SEER mean?

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating of a unit is the cooling output during a typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy input during the same period. The higher the unit’s SEER rating the more energy efficient it is. Just remember that SEER is seasonal, so it has no effect on energy savings during the heating season. The heating performance of your HVAC system is just as important as the cooling performance.

Why shouldn't I use "a guy in a truck" contractor?

Is he licensed, bonded, & insured? Will or can he pull a permit? Can he respond promptly to a service call or warranty call if he installed a new system. Legitimate contractors will always have their truck lettered, what better way to advertise than a rolling billboard. Most “a guy in a truck” won’t letter their vehicles so local code authorities aren’t aware they are even on a job. Be diligent in you selection of contractors, after all you are building a relationship for many years to come servicing your home comfort needs.

Why should I ask if a HVAC contract is licensed and insured?

This one is easy. No license is he qualified? Plus no license no permits! Not insured, if something goes wrong, damage to your home or he gets injured in your home, who will correct the problem or pay the medical bills?

How do I know if my installer is doing a safe and proper job?

Trust us on this one … go with the company who is properly licensed, insured, and background checked. Go with the company who extensively trains and certifies their technicians. Go with the company who can provide you with round-the-clock customer service response 24/7/365. Go with a company that has been in business for decades and has a stellar reputation for service and customer satisfaction since 1957. Why, because there’s a reason, actually several, why they’ve been in business all these years and have 7 locations to serve you throughout the DMV. AND there’s a reason that they aren’t bias and offer you the run of brands, providing service, maintenance, repairs, and installations for virtually any brand you could want.

Bottomline … Hire B&B and you NEVER have to ask this question.

What are the benefits of indoor air cleaners?

According to the EPA indoor air can be 2-5 times more polluted than the outdoor air. While standard disposable air filters work they only trap the largest particles in the air and allow anything smaller than 10-20 microns to pass through. (As a reference human hair is about 100 microns across.) A media air cleaner will trap 99% of 6 micron particles (pollen) and about 65% of 1 micron particles.

Why the cheaper HVAC guy isn't always your wisest choice.

The rule is simple here. Cheaper isn’t always better. Especially when it comes to the health and safety of your family. Using fly-by-night HVAC guys, who are often unlicensed (for a reason) and uninsured is a sure fire way to put you, your family and valuable home at risk of a whole host of dangerous problems. We understand that it feels good to save money, we respect that desire. We along with state licensing boards, consumer protection agencies, and HVAC manufacturers just think it’s better to work with legitimate contractors who can provide service through properly trained, certified, licensed, insured, and background checked contractors for a whole host of reasons why. Here are a few things you risk when hiring a guy and a truck contractor off the streets of the DMV.

NO BACKGROUND CHECK: Providing access to potentially dangerous individuals or record of criminal activities that could put your safety at serious risk of theft or crime.

NO RECOURSE: If they are not licensed and insured or a formalized business, then good luck going after them for damages, liabilities, warrantees and guarantees. Remember, HVAC manufacturer warrantees won’t be honored/don’t apply if you don’t follow their rules for using properly certified/licensed professionals to install their products. Just think of the money wasted if you have a problem and the manufacturer won’t honor a faulty or improperly installed or maintained product.

NO INSURANCE: No professional liability insurance, no personal protection, or job site insurance …. Eeek! If an uninsured worker is injured on your property, you pay … or at least your insurance does. Now if that doesn’t scare you into using an honest professional, we don’t know what will!

NO CERTIFIED TRAINING: Uh, who is going to certify that guy in a truck knows what he’s doing? Answer: NO ONE! So go ahead and hire them and then sit there worrying about things like deadly C02 poisoning if they haven’t been trained to properly ventilate an HVAC system. Think we sound overly dramatic? Think again. Alas, deadly C02 poisoning or a potential gas furnace explosion from improperly installed or poorly maintained HVAC systems is all too common these days and one cause is unqualified people working on heating systems. Sure we may sound like that overly dramatic friend of yours, but on this one we’re not. You need to trust us, we’ve seen some pretty hair raising dangers and hack jobs courtesy of many a guy in a truck driving around MD/DC/VA these days. Don’t believe us? Check out this exciting gallery of hack work we’ve been called in to fix over the years!

NO PARTS & LABOR GUARANTEE: Fly by night contractors don’t offer parts and labor guarantees. Legitimate HVAC contractors like B&B Air Conditioning and Heating Service Company have established relationships with all the major industry suppliers/manufacturers to ensure that we deliver first class parts and proper installations for every job we perform and we back it up with more than just mere lip service and assurances.

Is there a charge for a B&B HVAC technician to come out to my house?-

Typically, the answer is yes, unless … you are shopping a system replacement.

Like other HVAC services, B&B charges a diagnostic fee to dispatch a technician to your home, and this fee can often be applied towards the price of a purchase on installations if replacement is needed. To get the most bang for your buck, be sure to also ask about the latest Sales Promotions, Rebates and other special offers.

Full system replacements/installations consultations/estimates are always free charge and can be scheduled by calling us at the location nearest you

We also offer FREE second opinions, learn more.
